If you asked me about my dream workplace a few years ago, I would say a place where I could enjoy the flexibility of showing up to the office whenever I want to. I still love my job, but without being physically tied to a specific location.
Working remotely was always either-or a proposition until, sadly enough, Covid-19 pandemic transformed everything around us upside down.
Last year, when the pandemic started; companies all over the world had to follow the lockdown regulations and send their employees to work remotely. To be more specific, to work from home because every other place was closed due to these conditions.
Being a mother of a newborn, I was thrilled to experience this new work set up. Not only because it’s safer, but because I was really enjoying the many advantages of less time spent in commuting, more quality time with my family, and more focus on the end results. Thanks to the technology that made it possible in this new era.
What did it look like?
When conditions changed overnight, we were able to continue work from where we left off. STS provided us with a remote access VPN (Visitor Based Network) which provided access to securely log into the company’s network and all the resources that we might need while being away, as if we are in the office.
We were able to virtually hold our meetings via Microsoft Teams, catch up on our tasks and deadlines, send and receive e-mails on Microsoft Outlook, and conduct voice calls using Cisco Jabber. Should there was a need to access any resource such as CRM, use any application, or just submitting a vacation on the employee self-service platform; we were able to do so as if we were onsite. What if we had any trouble such as login issue? Our helpdesk team was one click or one phone call away to help us stay productive and worry free.
Missing the office and everyone there? There was a solution as well. We were able to enjoy an inclusive collaboration, regardless of our location, such as the online celebration of the “Employee of the Quarter” Award, the virtual “Coffee with the CEO” event and even we have celebrated Mothers’ Day during the lockdown! Moreover, we were still able to use the internal communication platform for socializing such as celebrating our birthdays and work anniversaries, sharing news and updates, and giving Kudus for the great achievements.
Not only we could do that using our laptops, but we were also enjoying the connectivity that our mobile phones provided through using different mobile apps for Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Teams and many more.
Simply, we could stay connected, kept informed, and got engaged all in real time, regardless of our physical location.
